Our story
“From Humble Beginnings to Oceanic Heights: The Inspiring Journey of AVRA Impex” – a dream born from determination and nurtured by resilience.
I started AVRA all the way from scratch with hope of making it successful one day. I went to Jaffna all the way from Colombo on the basis of buying and selling fish. Despite countless setbacks and rejections, I persevered, staying in Pungudutivu for eight days, praying for a chance. It was on the shores of Pungudutivu that fate smiled upon me, offering a helping hand to kickstart a business that would soon blossom into AVRA.
Mr. Irudhaya Joseph Fernando, affectionately known as Cheepa, a figure more than just a mentor in my life—he’s a fatherly presence whose belief in me sparked the start of Avra Impex, my dream venture. As the founder and visionary behind Avra Impex, Cheepa not only named the company but also envisioned its focus on crab—a niche that has since become our hallmark. His discerning eye and unwavering commitment to quality make him the indispensable quality controller of Avra Impex. Without his unwavering trust and encouragement, none of this would have come to fulfillment. His guidance continues to be the anchor upon which Avra Impex thrives and grows. Cheepa’s belief in me, especially when others doubted, is a testament to his foresight and our enduring bond, shaping the very essence of our success story.
With just one box of crabs, our journey began, each sale fueling our growth. From the alleys of Jaffna to the Central Fish Market Complex in Peliyagoda, we forged ahead, supplying the finest seafood like Squid, Tuna, Sea Bream, Emperor, Trevally, Grouper, Shark, Parrot Fish, and many more directly to seafood exporting companies & suppliers. We also started seafood exports to Switzerland with more than 30 varieties. Then we started home delivery & restaurant delivery in Colombo and suburbs in Sri Lanka.
Yet, our ambitions knew no bounds. Crossing oceans, we set foot in the UK. After nine months despite the challenges, supported by my devoted family, we established our first retail branch in The Glass Works Barnsley Market, Yorkshire rebranded as AVRA Fishmongers.
We also expanded AVRA Fishmongers from London’s prestigious Billingsgate Market to five other markets in Birmingham, Coventry, Leeds, and Bradford.
But our story doesn’t end with seafood. Evolving with the times, we’ve ventured into fresh produce, sourcing quality vegetables from Sri Lanka to complement our offerings, ensuring every meal is a celebration of freshness and flavor.
